New Mazda Takeri concept car to be shown in Geneva
Monday 13th February 2012 - 13:36
New Mazda Takeri concept car to be shown in Geneva Mazda will unveil its Takeri concept car for the first time in Europe at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show. Mazda Takeri is a next-generation mid-sized saloon featuring Mazda’s new and unique i-ELOOP regenerative braking technology. It will be joined on-stage by the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV - equipped with the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV technology - the MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2012 (on sale as the ‘Venture Edition’ in the UK), and an array of new technologies, plus a production model line-up.

The Takeri is the latest concept to adopt Mazda’s ‘KODO - Soul of Motion’ design theme, bringing a new level of strength and allure to saloon styling. The Mazda Takeri offers a taste of the future direction of Mazda’s next-generation CD-segment saloon, further developing the vision of the Mazda Shinari, an exciting four-door sports coupe concept showcased at Geneva last year. Under its captivating exterior, the Takeri features Mazda’s highly-efficient new SKYACTIV-D diesel engine with a fuel-saving ‘i-stop’ system and six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission.

The Takeri aims for the ultimate in energy efficiency without compromising on Mazda’s fun-to-drive performance and handling. It is the first Mazda car to be equipped with i-ELOOP - short for “Intelligent Energy Loop”. This is Mazda’s first regenerative braking system and uses a unique solution that converts kinetic energy to electricity during deceleration and stores it in an electric double-layer capacitor. The power is used to run the vehicle’s electric components, thereby reducing the load on the engine and increasing fuel economy by up to 10 percent. This contributes to the Mazda Takeri’s outstanding fuel economy, which is achieved at no sacrifice to performance or comfort.

The all-new Mazda CX-5 is the brand’s first production model incorporating the new ‘KODO - Soul of Motion’ design theme, and also the first built with the full range of SKYACTIV technology - engines, transmissions, body and chassis. The CX-5 compact crossover SUV delivers outstanding performance and responsive, predictable handling as well as a high-quality ride and exceptional safety. Class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions come courtesy of the CX-5’s extraordinary lightweight structure and sleek aerodynamic design, together with the remarkably frugal SKYACTIV engines (all featuring i-stop) and fuel-saving SKYACTIV transmissions.

Mazda’s display at the 82nd Geneva International Motor Show will also showcase the company’s brand-new SKYACTIV technology as well as the full range of current models. Press days are 6-7 March, and the show is open to the public from 8-18 March.
Vauxhall Reveals Geneva Motor Show Stars!
Friday 10th February 2012 - 16:44
Vauxhall Reveals Geneva Motor Show Stars! Vauxhall is to unveil a brace of stunning new models and a groundbreaking concept car at this year’s Geneva Show, which opens to press on March 6.

The hotly awaited, 280PS Astra VXR will wow Geneva show crowds ahead of its summer launch in the UK, and promises to raise the bar in the hot-hatch class, taking its lead from iconic predecessors like the Astra GTE Mk 1, 2 and 3 and outgoing VXR model.

Based on the GTC’s platform and powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine, the Astra VXR produces 280PS of power and a mighty 400Nm of torque, enough for it to achieve a top speed of 155mph.

But while the Astra VXR is based on the new GTC, it has benefited from a raft of bespoke chassis modifications, transforming it into a focused, high-performance coupe. Setting it apart from all other current Astras is a specially developed mechanical limited slip differential, which works on the front wheels. In conjunction with the GTC’s sophisticated HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut), the LSD provides the Astra VXR with exceptional lateral grip and traction through bends.

Further changes to the chassis include brakes developed by competition supplier, Brembo, and standard fitment of Vauxhall’s fully adaptive FlexRide system. In the Astra VXR, FlexRide features not only a Sport button, but a VXR button, offering drivers the choice of two, more focused stages of damper, throttle and steering control.

In stark contrast, the Mokka breaks new ground for Vauxhall, as it enters the growing small SUV market with its sharp design, choice of front- and four-wheel drive and high degree of interior versatility.

Vauxhall’s new small SUV will take the company into new market territory when it’s unveiled at Geneva. Called Mokka, the new model will enter the growing sub-compact SUV B-segment, and even at just 4.28 metres long can accommodate five adults in comfort.

The Mokka will be available with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system automatically and seamlessly transfers power to the wheels that need it most when grip levels are tested to the extreme.

Power is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol range comprises a 115PS, 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated engine or a 140PS 1.4-litre Turbo with 200Nm of torque. The diesel is a 130PS 1.7 CDTI turbo with 300Nm of torque. Both the 1.4 Turbo and the 1.7 CDTI can be combined either with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions.

The Vauxhall Mokka brings cutting-edge technologies to the SUV B-segment. The Advanced Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL+) which increases driving safety is based on the third-generation bi-xenon lighting system that includes High Beam Assist (HBA). The new generation Vauxhall front camera system is also available, giving the driver access to a number of functions including Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Alert (FCA) and second generation Traffic Sign Recognition.

Muscular and attractive, the Mokka incorporates Vauxhall’s signature ‘blade’ on the body side, sweeping towards the rear. The Mokka’s rugged character is reinforced by its higher ground clearance as well as a 1540mm track. Its robust looks are further enhanced by 18-inch alloy wheels which are standard on most models.

The Vauxhall Mokka will be available at Vauxhall dealerships towards the end of 2012.
New SEAT Exeo Glides into the Showroom!
Friday 10th February 2012 - 16:40
New SEAT Exeo Glides into the Showroom! The executive class 2012 SEAT Exeo is now available at Nidd Vale SEAT with even more style, economy and refinement available to savvy saloon and estate buyers.

Priced from just £19,480 RRP, SEAT’s much-admired Exeo saloon and Exeo ST estate range boasts a new look and some important engineering upgrades.

The 2012 cars’ revised ‘face’ - with new bi-xenon headlights and stunning LED daytime running lights (standard on Sport models and optional on SE spec’ cars) - ensures it once again cuts a real dash in the executive car park.

The styling enhancements, boosted by smart new alloy wheel designs, further underline the high ue Exeo range’s premium look while upgrades to interior materials - including improved leather on the steering wheel and revised upholstery - create a matching premium feel.

Meanwhile, improvements to the high quality SEAT saloon and estate’s 2.0 TDI common rail powerplant see emissions cut to as little as 129 g/km. Economy is similarly improved, too, with the Exeo saloon now being capable of as much as 58.9 mpg on the EU’s combined cycle.

The Exeo’s elegant styling upgrades, allied to SEAT’s ongoing commitment to improving quality and fuel economy, as well as reducing emissions, are already generating even more interest in the range. The luxurious saloon and estate car line-up is the Spanish brand’s third best-seller in the UK behind the perennially popular Ibiza supermini and Leon five-door family hatch.

As 2012 unfolds the Exeo family is set for even more upgrades, too, with the likely arrival of an Ecomotive version. SEAT’s cleanest, greenest cars all bear the Ecomotive moniker and are synonymous with environmental efficiency. The Ibiza Ecomotive, for instance, emits just 92 g/km of CO2 while the Leon Ecomotive is hot on its heels with a road tax- and London congestion charge-busting CO2 figure of just 99 g/km.

The forthcoming Exeo Ecomotive will boast many of the same technologies that make its Ecomotive siblings such frugal propositions. SEAT’s effortless Start/Stop technology, for instance, will help deliver even more fuel efficiency.

SEAT is targeting an ambitious CO2 figure of less than 120 g/km for the Start/Stop-equipped Exeo which will, of course, enhance its appeal to both environmentally-conscious private buyers and UK fleet managers who demand such low emissions levels from even their executive models.

SEAT UK Managing Director Peter Wyhinny said: ‘The showroom arrival of the freshly upgraded Exeo range comes at a great time for SEAT. With another record year under our belt in 2011, and sales continuing their upward trend so far this year, our dealers are already busy.

‘The revised Exeo is yet another reason for buyers to visit - and that’s all before the new Ibiza supermini range and brilliant new Mii city car make their UK debuts.

‘2012 is set to be the most exciting year in SEAT’s history, and the Exeo gets things off to the perfect start.’
VAUXHALL AMPERA TAKES TOP PRIZE AT WHAT CAR? GREEN AWARDS
Friday 9th September 2011 - 12:06
VAUXHALL AMPERA TAKES TOP PRIZE AT WHAT CAR? GREEN AWARDS What Car?, the UK’s leading consumer focused motoring magazine, has named the Vauxhall Ampera as its Green Car of the Year 2011. The Ampera was also its top alternative-fuel car.

What Car? editor-in-chief, Chas Hallett said: “The Vauxhall Ampera represents a massive step for alternative-fuel cars. It offers all the benefits of owning an electric vehicle with virtually none of the drawbacks. It gives motorists the ability to dramatically reduce their emissions without changing their lifestyle, which is exactly what green cars need to do.”

This isn’t the first time the Ampera has found favour with What Car?’s judges. In 2009, when Vauxhall first revealed details of the car’s clever Voltec system, the Ampera was given the magazine’s prestigious Green Technology Award.

Demolishing the issue of ‘range anxiety’ altogether, the Ampera’s clever Voltec system helps it achieve an incredible *175mpg and combined emissions of below 40g/km, according to official R(EC) 715/2007 regulations for measuring fuel consumption and C02 emissions.

Drivers can expect between 25-50 miles of zero-tailpipe emissions motoring (often enough for a typical daily commute), yet thanks to the Ampera’s innovative range-extender generator, it can be driven for up to 310 miles without having to re-charge the battery or replenish the fuel tank.

“The Ampera takes Vauxhall into a new era,” said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Managing Director. “It can genuinely be considered a car that can perform a full range of family duties, with its four-seats and five-door body. Yet its 100mph performance and brisk acceleration mean that it can hold its own in the cut and thrust of everyday motoring, unlike many EVs currently on sale.”

There’s already massive interest in the Ampera from UK buyers through Vauxhall’s ePioneers scheme. For a modest £150, potential buyers can reserve one of the first build slots for the car and join a rapidly growing, but still exclusive, group of people who are destined to become the very first Ampera drivers in Britain.
